History of Žmergo

Association Žmergo is a Croatian civil society organization based in Opatija. It was founded in 1994. by local enthusiasts inspired to improve the quality of life in the local community, as well as on the national level. Main aims of our activity are preservation of the environment, protection of natural and cultural heritage and promotion of sustainable development. For almost 20 years now, Žmergo has been encouraging citizens to participate in making important decisions about the environment at the local level and organizing and implementing projects on both the local and national level.

Project environment:

The project will take place in Opatija, a sea town in western Croatia, just southwest of Rijeka on the Adriatic coast. It is a popular summer and winter resort, with average temperatures of 10 °C in winter, and 25 °C in summer, and with the population of 11.659 inhabitants in total, of which 6.657 live in the urban settlement. The whole sea-coast to the north and south of Opatija is picturesque, making it a special place for staying. At a very short distance from Opatija, it is possible to discover beaches, countryside, mountains, parks of nature and different areas of historical interest. Even if the official language is Croatian, it is possible to get by with speaking only English, since almost everybody speaks it, especially among the youngsters.

The organisation is situated in the city centre, close to the bus station, shops, various coffee shops and restaurants. The office of Zmergo is situated in the old villa. Opposed to the office is the town park Angiolina which contains many species of plants from all over the world. Also, there is a 12 km-long promenade along the entire Riviera, which also includes Opatija.

EVS Žmergo

The volunteer will be included in core team from the beginning of his/her EVS experience and will get guidance by his/her supervisor and mentor, but also will get help from any other team member. This will potentiate the integration in the community and help to solve any possible issue that volunteer may have. Volunteers will work 30 hours per week, and will have right to have 24 days off through out the year. EVS volunteers will have an opportunity to learn about different topics connected with environment and sustainable development through their work. They will shape their knowledge about NGO management, decision making procees, volunteer work and work within civil society. Among other, volunteers will learn the meaning of team work and independent work, time management, and how to be a conscious volunteer. The activities in which the volunteers can be involved are mainly connected with the organisation, elaboration and implementation of national and international projects and campaigns depending on the interest of volunteer.
Volunteer’s own project:

The activities that one volunteer can create will depend on volunteer’s interests and organizational operative capacities that can be used for those activities. During the development and implementation of his/her project, the volunteer will have full support from the organisation, that can help him/her with the advices and experience. Also, all the ideas will be discuss together, so the volunteer cannot only use his/her own imitative but also learn in the process.

Activities
To start, the volunteers can be included in event management, where they will create and develop different types of events, mostly for national campaign Zelena cistka. The volunteers will be included in the entire process, from beginning till the end. They will brainstorm on where, when and how to organise the event, contact different national and international stakeholders (sponsors, local authorities, volunteers, NGOs), and perform all other necessary activities needed for successful event. In the end, the volunteers can perform an analysis about the implemented event, to see what they have learned and what they can improve/repeat for the next time.
Next, volunteers can be included in IT projects, where they will work with databases and web administration. Creating different databases (for example in Google docs) is very important for any type of the project since it helps to have a better organisation and control over the project. Web administration consists from uploading pictures and videos on Zmergo’s website, along with the text. Also, under IT projects, volunteers can try to create another websites (or channels or forums) depending on their interest.
Promotion activities can also be a part of EVS experience. The volunteers will actively be included in the promotion of all Zmergo’s activities, promoting them online, in local media or through public presentations (for example at schools). Also, for the purpose of quality promotion, volunteers can produce video materials and photos that will help to increase the visibility of the projects.
Next, education about environmental issues will be implemented through various seminars or workshops that can be held in the office of the organisation, schools or during various activities that will be held for public. Volunteers will introduce different environmental topics, problems and solutions, and in that way they will enhance people awareness about green behaviour, all through non-formal education.
PR activities will include designing the PR strategy (for example how to use social media, and when to contact newspapers and television) by using existing PR Zmergo’s contact database. Volunteers will have to communicate with different stakeholders (journalists, columnists, reporters, editors on web portals) in order to present the work of EVS volunteers, their activities, as well as Zmergo’s activities.
Also, the volunteers can be involved with marketing activities where they primarily will be engaged with fundraising and finding sponshorship (for example, finiding companies who will support national campaign Zelena cistka).
In the end, it will also be possible for volunteers to do administrative tasks which include preparation of documents, keeping the projects on schedule etc.
It is important to say that the volunteers will be able to engage themselves in more than one type of activity, depending on their interests and organisation’s needs, and in that way they can develop different skills that after they can utilise in their professional life, but as well the personal one. All activities will make an on-going creative process, meaning that the volunteers will have an opportunity to start with the activities and implement it all the way till the end, with Zmergo’s assistance but also with a high level of independence.
